Sparrow Ink Drawing

Hi there.

Sparrows are very popoular here, but I haven’t known much about them. You pay few attention things common around you. They have brown color feather which I haven’t seen cute in childhood.

My reminds of sparrow is small, chattering, hopping and black spot on cheak. These four points compose the sparrow for me. If you share at least one of the impressions that I have, and I can depict my brain image on paper, this sparrow ink drawing would succeed.

Tips:

Head: The ink is not so black. The brush must lies until the table horizontal line. The top of the hair would touch the first on paper and draw back little like five mili-centimeter, then the whole hair touch the paper. The shape of the brush goes to the shape of sparrow’s head. The gradation of the brush goes to the gradation of the head. The round shape of head looks like the kid sparrow.

Wash the brush and put very black ink on it, squeeze water out

Eye: The positon of eye is the center of the bay of the round head you dipict first. Sparrow’s eye positions in the dark hair because of defense against the attack. In sumi-e drawing, the pursuit of reality would hide the eye in black ink sea in this case. We draw the south sphere of eye.

Beak: Continuouslly, the beak drawing. You need the brush twist around (or turn around??), I mean you hold the brush like when you use a fountain pen. The beak positions the first touch point of head.

Black spot: This is the most black part of sparrow drawing. The positon of spot is the most important part as well, in order for your sumi-e paiting to look like sparrow. The tip for it is that the base line of the spot must the same position of the head. The base of the spot separetes the head from the body.

Wash the brush. Put very light ink and squeeze the top the hair of brush to make it flat.

Body: The round stroke would give the light white feather. The breast position must be curved with this part.

Wash the brush. Put black ink and squeeze the hair to make it flat.

Feather: One of the failure reason for the sparrow ink drawing is too long and big feather. The feather can be 2 cm shorter than what you thought before starting to draw. 2 storkes is enough for the feather. Take breathe when the hair of the brsuh touch the paper and then sweep out. That generates gradation of feather. Sweep with quick.

Wash the brush. Put black ink and squeeze the hair to make it flat.

Tail: The tail is short as well. Sweep out stroke. The tail does  not need connect with the body.

Wash the brush. Put very black ink and squeeze thte water out of the hair.

Legs: To keep sparrow cute, the legs don’t need the reality. The starting point to draw the leg is the white body line. The light ink and this time black ink will be blurred, the moment of which I love ! The back nail might be omitted. Please reference the below video and explanation photo. and if you have question, ask me thru facebook, twitter or youtube, etc.

The Who came to Tokyo ! at Budokan

My first memory to have the Who is the live tour album, ‘Who’s last’, 1984. I saw that cover photo of buring the union jack and thought very cool. There is a record shop near Chiba station, where I grew up, 25 miles away from Tokyo, and that record shop sold lots of british records. Saturday afternoon, I quite often was there, and just looking for the analog records cover photos. I don’t have enough money to buy one record every week. and I couldn’t buy Who’s last, because that was double records……

After high school, I got some CD of the Who, through friends or bought one and watched the Quadrophonia.. I like the British rock in my teens, and so did my friends. I had no
friends to share the love for the british rocks in high school days,
but there were lots in college.chose Brighton for the summer English study program. I stayed one month at a member of the 10CC house, who was living there.

then, The Who came to Tokyo ! they came four years back, but it was for the festival, this is the first time for them to be here as the tour…

I went to the Monday gig at Budokan, and that was fabirous. Mr.Townsent guitar was tight and Roger’s voice was brilliant. Budokan is ten thousand capacity arena, much better expierience than Tokyo Dome that has fifty thousand capa. Stones, Bono, Bowie…the big name plays the big arena,,,, so was very lucky to see The Who’s gig at such a just-fit place. It was the first time to see live show at Budokan since Tom Petty in the mid 90’s. at that time, the clipping noise was hunging around a hole.

anyway, when the intro of Baba O’reily started, I shed tears. I couldn’t help. Baba O’Reily expierience was much more fabrious even than Stones, who is my favorite. It reminds me of the Michel Gun Elephant at Atlanta. I am not big fun of them, but I was moved the fact that Japanese rock band coming around the gig tour in the States where they have no fame. I felt their sprit of keeping move on.

The Who makes me overflowing tears, but not Stones. I guess the reason for that rely deeply on the diffrence of their rylics and music style. I like stones rock frame of the american blues and country mixture. Who is not like that, their music remains the great britain green grass hills long under the grey sky and the New Castle dizzy protest. That young straight Mods rythm beat me. Stones has rolling, but Who is shaking.

After the show,  I listen the CD of Baba, but not so good as live show… nothing is better than going live show.

The audience there was relatively old gen. skewed, assumingly having waited this first who live here sinve the teenage  waste  land.  The guy sitting nex to me surely bought a ticket from my friend at the previous show on Sunday, Saitama arena, who was supposed to come with me this night. He is totally normal salary man no one would think him of rock fun. Budokan was filled with guy in normal in daytime, but still ‘need to fight’ fire in mind. The neighbour guy got MD and recorded the live. I finger-whistled quite often so that I can recgnize in case I got the bootleg.

Shrimp Ink Drawing

I  like shrimp much as food. Shrimp soup, shrimp tempura, shrimp fried rice. It would cost more if you want to add shrimp on a normal fried rice, but I would choose to have shrimp in it.

When I was in Texas, I liked boiled chili crawfish(w/t beer), crawfish looked like shrimp, but it was the first time for me to eat crawfish.

■Tips:

Head: The brush needs to lie, and the top of brush will depict the top of head.

Body: first big later smaller

Tail: Press the hair of brush to make it flat and wipe water out of the brush a little. The hair of top flat of brush will express the notch of tail

Eye,feet: Brush must shape tight and black ink needed

Barbels: Brush -> the same as eye

Bodhidharma Sumi-E Drawing

I was believing Bodhidharma was Japanese. Because I played a game called "dharma-san" a lot. This is said "tag" in my dictionary. (as always no idea for the right words) anyway, everybody knows a tag called dharma-san ga koronda. and lots of designed dharma figure coloured red are here. even I loved to have a "dharma box lunch" at Takasaki station which was on the way to the country house. It futures the dhrma face(see the link). So my image of dharma is from this box lunch and thought evry kind person like a priest in the cinema.

The real bodhidharma was not like today’s deformed one. He was very stubborn and severe. He was from India, so he got large eyes and long nose. I was surprised at Hakuin or Sesshu bodhidharma paintings because they have very severe dharma san.

Tips:

1. Front neckband is the key to draw the tradional asian figure wearing kimono style clothes. I made the hard line first which was inspired by the Hakuin’s line and Sesshu’s cave rock line.

2. First, light black (more water than usual) is on the eyebrow, then before getting dry fully, put more black stroke added. So you can get some depth, profound expression.

Mount Fuji Sumi Drawing

I was reading an art design article who are brushing thier clothes and she said, "I want to wear a dress drawn mountain Fuji." wow

anyway, Mt.Fuji can be seen from most of Tokyo and its surpurve like Chiba or Saitama. Since Tokyo is vegy vast flat land near the sea, I am not like seeing mountains everyday. So I don’t have any natural respect for the mountain rather than sea or river…

We can find the word "Fuji" in many Japanese. The popular TV station is called "Fuji TV", lots of "Fuji-mi", meaning "see Fuji" (Fuji-mi Zaka -> the hill where you can see mt.Fuji),… I can think our ancesters have loved mt.Fuji.

I once climbed to the top of there to see the sun rise. After two hour way, the bus arrived at the half point to the top. It was around six o’clock in the evening. a walking thru the night until midnight. The sun rise from the top was exciting view. more than that I still remember the fun jumping down walk on the back way.

Tips:

1. Draw the mountains around Mt.Fuji. Mt. Fuji from Tokyo is seen like this. These mountains locate in Hakone area where good hot springs is. To draw mountans, you need lay the brush and move side, so that the thick sumi ink on the top of the brush can depict the ridge line and can express the vague cloud hiding part

2. The angle of mountain Fuji is needed to exaggerate so that anyone can understand what you draw. Start with thin line and at the middle of the ridge, push the brush and throw it down. The shaft of the brush and the line direction goes toward the same way whereas the surrounding mountains are drawn by the side slide.

3. The shade of the hill: first light move and push, then run.

Sumi-e Carp, Koi Painting Tips

Hi, there.

Carp… are you guys familliar with it? I saw them in the dirty river, "Kanda-river" in Tokyo downtown where I was raised.

Carp is die-hard fish. It can live in such a dirty. It originated in China

This kind of carp tasted good for boiled(?)- sashimi, called Koi no Arai ("Arai" means washing) . Here’s good site for carp recipe in English

Nishiki-goi, colourful ornamental carp, are one of items which reminds us of Japanese cerebrity life, was creative breeding work in sixteenth century in Niigata pref., the northern area in Japan.

Nishiki-goi swims gourgeous like kimono girls. very fun to see.

Some might hear about Chinese old saying, carp turns out dragon climbing the waterfall. We say To-ryu-mon, literery climb, dragon, gate, for the new comer contest. American Idle is kinds of to-ryu-mon of artists.

I draw this inspired by the old sixteenth carp painting which I bought in London. The wild carp shapes not like glamorous body of nishiki-goi but dull bullet streamline. So does this carp.

Tips:

1. Two barbels

2. Eyes are small but there are circles around eyes.

3. Pectoral must be depicted precisely, because this is the key point of carp. Imagine the wing of birds.

4. Scales…. your choice. precise or smoothing. I say, just line it. then drip sumi-ink over.

Sumi-E Cherry Blossom Painting

Hi, there.

What flower do you have in mind on your home land?? I have cherry blossom, because it starts blooming in the spring, which  is not only the season for the sun, but for the new school year and fiscal year in Japan. I always remember the first day of elementary school where I could see the water pink colored cherry blossom over the school yard. That is what I recoginize the flower is beautiful. hhh Cherry blossom is the symbol of start, fresh and beautiful for me. How about you??

Tips:

Cherry blossom could be tough motif for some of you, especially the shape of each flower. Too round looks like the plum and too much oval looks  something diffrent. ONe of important technique of sumi-E is "omitting", "cut middle" or whatever you’re saying (sorry, I have merely funny words). I mean, the cherry blossom has five piece of petal  but  you don’t need paint all of that. Cut off the two, three is enough. "Realism is not that you depict correct but you think it correct."<- my policy (^_^);  The hair of brush must chopped in two so that you can get split top petal of cherry.

Then, pistel and stamen.Make solid black on brush. Take one breath moment when you put brush on paper and swing. It gives small black round and soft pistel right in the middl e of the flower.

The trunk: Take sumi-ink in the small plate and make thin black ink with water. Put the brush that ink and get solid black ink from the ink stone. Lay the brush horizontally on paper and pull down holding horizontal position.

Scar face on the trunk: Before got dry the trunk ink,  split the hair of bursh and get black ink, arc line gives like round trunk feeling.

Brunch: Brucn got small rugged.

Small buds should be some of the top of brunch.. Enjoy…

Sumi-E Snowfiled Paintng

Hello there.

It’s been raining since this morning. I have been wondering since kids days the western people are walking in the rain without umbrella. This comes from some films or TV shows I saw in childhood. well, foreigners in Tokyo are seen rarely walking in the rain with no umbrella..

Tha last year when I played golf in the nice London surburb, my long time question happened to melt down. My guess is; when I started at the first hole, it was clear sky fine weather and England green hills are stretching out. It, however, started raining and was getting colder in the middle of the game. Then, when I got hole out, the blue sky returned over my head. …hmmm I thought Europe (I know this expression huge…) especially England (I have not knowledge about Scotland or other places in GBR), the rain is falling in the short period. They know that it will stop raining soon. Therefore people don’t need to bring umbrella.

In Tokyo, if it is raining in the morning, it will rain when you come back home. so unconsciously I take an umbrella when leaving home. Or, it starts raining during the day, I will buy a plastic umbrella($3-5). I know I need this all day.

Tips:

1. In sumi-E painting, the colour of the rice paper is the etreme white. The snowfield is expressed without no drawing, which means the snow will show up  the outline.

2. The creek muste be depicted the black which splush out the snow white.

3. Mind the contrast expression will work. See Rembrandt way of painting, he depicts the collar very white. It works to emphasize the face.

4. The black creek streak play a role which takes the viewing eye movement away to the far away mountains. It recalls viewers some memories.

Sumi-E Owl Painting

How’s going??

Owl for Japanese is "Fukurou". Some loves the owl because "Fuku" reminds us of "Happiness"and collect the owl goods like sculpture or paintings of owl to wish their good fortune.

Also, the owl is thought of the gods of the wisedom. We have a famous cram school called Dr.fukurou school. I have seen so many oals which are drawn and painted mostly pretty.

I have a positive image on the owl. But, I happened to know that not so many area around the world has the same image about the owl. Let me know the owl legend in your place.

Tips:

1. To paint the feather of body, would be good way to twist and widen the hair of brush. Use this technique almost all process of painting the oal.

2. The face is round. Keep short strokes and shape the face round.

3. The beak is hard and solid, sticking solidly downward. the most black sumi-ink is needed.

Goldfish Ink Drawing Sumi-e

Kids here used to have goldfish breeding in an old brazier, which was dumped in a backyard. At the beginning of the summer vacation, they came to see goldfish and to give foods every morning. But when the summer has gone, they almost forgot about these tiny fish. And in the autumn festival season, they got fun for "Kingyo sukui", catch goldfish, but it didn’t helo to recall their goldfish.. The next spring comes, they happened to find goldfish growing in mossed brazier. die hard fish.

How to draw goldfish with sumi ink.

Sumi-e is kind of vague art. You don’t seek the reality as much as 3D motion pictures do like "Beowolfe". Sumi-e art has its own way to come across the actual fish, flower or animals. The way for it is omitness. When you see paintings, you figure out what it is with the reflection of your memory which you have seen. Each memory of goldfish would be different one another, so the omitness would show up different on the paper. My memory of goldfish is red and gold bodh and a long tail fin. I exggerate that part and omit to depict other part. If it still looks goldfish to you, it would be succesful. Sumi-e is not the mirror art at what you see, but the talking with your mind art. You don’t need mind your goldfish looks like others, just listen your mind and take a stroke.
